Where to go, when to arrive, and how to avoid the crowds.

Santorini’s famous beaches are beautiful — and busy. But if you’re after something quieter, more natural, and a little off the radar, these are the spots we go to.

Some have beach bars with chill music, most don’t. All offer stillness, space, and that slower summer feeling we locals never get tired of.

Sunset on Santorini is more than just a photo — it’s an experience. And while most people flock to Oia, we’ve gathered our favorite spots from around the island where you can watch the sky turn gold, pink, and then deep blue — without the elbow-to-elbow crowds.

Tip: always check the exact sunset time for your visit, and arrive at least 45 minutes early — especially in high season.

🌄 1. The Hidden Gem, the Heart of Santorini & St. Nicholas Chapel (near Megalochori).

This area is home to one of my favorite sunset routes — peaceful, scenic, and full of character. Search for “Agia Triada Cemetery Megalochori” on Google Maps to find the starting point (coordinates: 36.377895, 25.427918). There’s room to park 1–2 cars near the small white church — sometimes referred to as the “Hidden Gem of Santorini.”

You can enjoy the sunset right from the rooftop of the church, but if you follow the trail along the cliff, it leads you to the Heart of Santorini and a tiny chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas. The “heart” used to resemble a lopsided heart — a natural opening in the aspa (soft volcanic cliff) with a view of the caldera beyond. Over time the shape has softened, but the view is still just as striking. To reach the final viewpoint with the little bell structure and a quiet bench, follow the trail downhill for about 10 minutes from the upper parking area. The path is dusty and uneven, so definitely wear sneakers (not flip-flops). Whether you stop at the Hidden Gem or go all the way to the Heart, this is one of the most rewarding sunset spots on the island — and still mostly missed by the crowds.

🌅 2. Akrotiri Lighthouse (Not as remote as it looks!)

Located at the southwestern tip of the island, the Akrotiri Lighthouse offers a beautiful caldera-facing sunset — dramatic cliffs, wide sky, and the sun sinking directly into the sea. It’s a popular spot, so don’t expect total solitude. In high season, it gets crowded and parking can be tricky (especially close to sunset), so arrive early or be ready to walk a bit.

There’s a small canteen nearby where you can grab a water or a snack, but no real facilities — just a rocky path, a low stone wall, and a sky full of color.

🧿 3.The First Windmill (of Emporio)

Just off the road to Emporio, shortly after the turnoff to Akrotiri, you’ll spot the first windmill on the hill (36.354855, 25.440034) — a lesser-known spot with a lovely view over the caldera and surrounding coast.

There’s no official sign, but if you find a place to park nearby and walk up a bit, you’ll be rewarded with a peaceful place to sit and watch the sunset — with fewer people than down by the lighthouse. Bring a blanket, maybe a snack, and enjoy the view like a local.

🍷 4. Santo Wines Winery

For a sunset with a glass in hand, Santo Wines is one of the best places on the island. You’ll get panoramic views over the caldera and a front-row seat to the sun dipping below the cliffs — all while sipping local Assyrtiko and snacking on Santorini-style meze.

It’s elegant but casual, and ideal if you want to enjoy the sunset without sitting on a rock. Just be sure to book ahead — this place fills up, especially during peak season.

🍽️ 5. Amoudi Bay

Down the cliff below Oia, this little fishing village has become a go-to for sunset dinners by the sea. The view is iconic: boats in the harbor, red cliffs glowing, and the sun slipping into the sea behind Thirassia.

It’s not exactly a hidden spot anymore, but it’s still worth it. The vibe is warm and romantic — especially if you time your dinner right. Any of the tavernas along the waterfront will give you a front-row seat to the view (and some great seafood). Just be sure to reserve in advance — this spot fills up fast.

⛰️ 6. Profitis Ilias (Highest point on the island)

For a totally different kind of sunset, head up to the top of Santorini — literally. Profitis Ilias is the highest point on the island and offers a 360° view of the land, the sea, and the shifting colors of the sky. It’s not a caldera-facing view, but it’s expansive and peaceful. On clear days, you can see all the way to Anafi. You won’t find wine bars or sunbeds up here — just quiet, wind, and maybe the ringing of a bell from the monastery. A perfect spot for photographers, hikers, or anyone who wants to watch the island glow from above.

💦 7. Suites of the Gods Infinity PoolIf you’re after that over-the-top sunset moment, this place has it — endless caldera views, cliffside sunbeds, and a dramatic infinity pool that looks like it pours into the sea. It’s an adults-only venue, which keeps the vibe calm and romantic.

You can reserve sunbeds during the day (prices range from €40 to €160 for two), or just go for a cocktail at the bar around sunset and ask if you can use the pool — sometimes they’ll say yes. Even if you don’t swim, the view is stunning, and the atmosphere feels luxurious without being too formal. There’s parking available above the hotel (36.38301957107351, 25.43412480978561), just before the road dips down toward the port.

⛵ 8. Sunset Cruise with Vista YachtingIf you really want to escape the crowds, watch the sunset from the water. A catamaran cruise gives you the freedom to see Santorini’s coastline from a completely new angle — with stops for swimming, views of the caldera cliffs, and golden-hour photos from the deck.

I used to work with Vista Yachting, so I know them well and happily recommend them. I can also help you choose a cruise and book it directly — just ask me. It's a special experience I always suggest to guests, especially if you're celebrating something (or even if you're not).

☀️ Before You Go

No matter where you watch it from — a quiet cliff, a bar with a cocktail, or the deck of a catamaran — Santorini’s sunset always feels a little magical. Just remember: the good spots fill up, so always check the sunset time and aim to arrive at least 45 minutes early (more in summer). And if you’re staying with us at Dagris Villa and want help choosing the best spot for your mood or your evening plans, just ask — we’re always happy to help you find your sunset moment.
